"For this show I want to retrace my steps and bring together a body of work that has let me bee the person I am today." – Bumblebeelovesyou
Bee Yourself is the first solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Bumblebeelovesyou. Maintaining the theme of time throughout his work, Bumblebee offers a combination of painting, sculpture, and smaller art objects, which unite to create an installation in line with the atmospheres and sentiments tangible in the artist’s work.
Socially and environmentally conscious, Bumblebee draws attention to youth homelessness by depicting images of children playing, sleeping, and resting on sanctioned public walls. Similarly, he uses the public platform to spotlight the rising risk of bee extinction due to the increase in cell phone use by removing unused public telephone booths and inserting papier mâché beehives with bees in them performing various quotidian tasks.
This is the beginning of a new era for the artist, appropriately opening on 1.23 of 2014. As Bumblebee transitions out of his years of working in anonymity, he will usher in a new level of work and ideas, continuing his tradition of pushing his media and concepts to their limit. This includes augmenting his oeuvre with a new series of sculptures titled “Land Beefore Time,” 10 foot tall sundials, and playful miniature artworks.
